Cruce The Popular Card Game In Romania

Date:2026-02-22

Cruce (the Romanian word for “Cross”) is a popular trick-taking card game, primarily played in Romania and parts of Eastern Europe. It belongs to the Marriage family of games, making it a close cousin to the German game 66 and the Austrian Schnapsen.

It’s known for being fast-paced, highly strategic, and—depending on who you’re playing with—quite competitive.

1. The Basics

  • Players: Usually played with 3 or 4 players.
  • In a 4-player game, you play in two fixed-partner teams.
  • In a 3-player game, it’s every person for themselves.

  • The Deck: It uses a stripped-down deck of 24 cards (9s through Aces).
  • The Goal: To be the first team or player to reach a specific point total (usually 11 or 21 “game points”) by winning tricks and “announcing” pairs.

2. Card Values

The hierarchy and point values are a bit different from standard games like Poker or Bridge:

Card Point Value
Ace 11 points
Ten 10 points
King 4 points
Queen 3 points
Jack 2 points
Nine 0 points

Note: The total number of points available in the cards alone is 120.

3. Key Mechanics

  • The Trump (Atu): One suit is designated as the “trump” suit and beats all cards of other suits.
  • The “Marriage” (Anunț): This is the core of the game. If you hold the King and Queen of the same suit, you can “announce” them when it’s your turn to lead a trick.
  • Trump Marriage: Worth 40 points.
  • Regular Marriage: Worth 20 points.

  • Following Suit: Unlike some games, you must follow suit if you can. If you can’t, you must play a trump card. If you can’t do either, you can play any card.

4. Bidding and Scoring

At the start of a round, players “bid” based on how many points they think they can earn (e.g., 60, 80, 100). The highest bidder chooses the trump suit.

  • If you make your bid, you earn game points.
  • If you fail, you lose points (often called going “down”).

Why People Love It

It’s a game of memory and math. Since the deck is so small (only 24 cards), experienced players usually know exactly which cards have been played and what remains in their opponents’ hands by the middle of the round.
